Aso-Kuju National Park

A Thrilling Exploration of Volcanic Komezuka

Parks Overview Parks Overview

Explore the otherworldly landscape of Komezuka

Go on a thrilling adventure to Komezuka, a spectacular 80-meter-tall volcano in the grasslands of Aso-Kuju National Park. A knowledgeable guide will introduce this area that is usually off-limits and take you deep into a 16-meter "lava tunnel" that was created by volcanic activity. Uniquely shaped and vibrant green in color, Komezuka is believed to have been formed around 3,000 years ago. The surrounding grasslands are maintained by local farmers through grazing, grass collecting, and field burning, and were designated a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System in 2013. This tour is operated in partnership with the local farmers association and provides a unique opportunity to explore the natural wonder of Komezuka while learning about the history and culture of the area.
