What do you look for in a trip to Japan? Tasting Japanese food, encountering traditional culture, and enjoying hot springs are some of the pleasures, and staying at a ryokan, a Japanese-style inn, is another highlight to look forward to. With their hot springs, yukata (Japanese bathrobe), futon (Japanese bedding), and other traditional Japanese features, ryokans are places not just to stay, but also to enjoy the full Japanese experience.

The area spanning Niigata, Gunma, and Nagano Prefectures is called YUKIGUNI, which literally means “Snow Country.” This YUKIGUNI region is located a mere 70 minutes by Shinkansen from Tokyo, yet in winter it is a totally different white world, covered in up to three meters of snow.

A rich natural environment unparalleled anywhere in the world, the unique Snow Country culture and a memorable staying experience await you at the YUKIGUNI ryokans. Labeled as eco lodges, the YUKIGUNI ryokans are sustainability-conscious facilities that protect the local environment, contribute to the local community, and offer the opportunity to enjoy authentic natural and cultural experiences.

Enjoy traditional hospitality, seasonal gourmet cuisine, and high-quality hot springs as you discover a hidden side of Japan. Closely entwined with the surrounding landscape, each of these eco-lodges shares the desire to pass on the local nature and culture to the next generation, with the aim of “Ensuring that there will be a Snow Country 100 years from now.”
