Visit sake breweries in Kurashiki and learn about the process of making Japan’s iconic rice-based beverage
Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture
The long tradition of sake brewing in Okayama Prefecture continues to this day, with breweries using techniques and knowledge passed down by generations of toji, or master brewers.
In Kurashiki, the Sankan Brewery and Kikuchi Brewery are ideal destinations for visitors seeking to learn more about the process of making sake, as they offer both information in English and sake tastings on site.
Founded in 1806, the Sankan Brewery creates brews made from two major rice varieties that originated in Okayama Prefecture, along with pure water from a source at the foot of the nearby mountains. The flavor palate is carefully tailored to match and elevate the flavor of the fresh seafood landed at nearby Shimotsui Port. The Sankan Brewery is committed to preserving and expressing the terroir of the local area through their creations.
The Kikuchi Brewery began creating sake in 1878 and stands at a corner of the traditional wholesale district in the Tamashima area of Kurashiki City. Thanks to the excellent water from the Takahashi River valley and carefully selected rice varieties, they brew top-quality sake using traditional methods. Be sure to give them a call well in advance to book your tour.
