The Oirase Gorge runs 14 kilometres from Lake Towada to the foot of Mount Hakkoda. It is one of the most beautiful river valleys in Japan, with various spectacular waterfalls adding to the beauty of the place.
It is most spectacular during the autumn season when the leaves turn into a vibrant hue of yellow and red, contrasting with the vivid green moss on the rocks and creating a magnificent sight.
The autumn colours peak every year around the end of October to the beginning of November. Visitors to the gorge can hike on the different trails to enjoy the lush forest.
