Oyunuma Pond

Take a walk to see the sulfurous, gourd-shaped pond with white steam rising from its waters

Noboribetsu City

Oyunuma is a gourd-shaped pond that is accessible from Noboribetsu Onsen, one of the most famous hot spring resorts in Hokkaido.
Formed by the phreatic explosion of Mt. Hiyori, the pond is about one kilometer in circumference, and is known as one of the popular scenic spots of the area along with the volcanic calderas of Jigokudani.

At its surface, the pond's temperature ranges between 40 and 50 °C, while at its depths, sulfur springs violently erupt with a temperature of about 130 °C. The smell of sulfur pervades the vicinity of the big pond, and the rising steam makes it look like a cauldron from hell.

There is also an observatory nearby, where you can capture the whole picture of Oyunuma on your camera. You will be able to take in breathtaking landscapes, such as the height of the autumn foliage in mid-October.
If you've traveled to Oyunuma, you should also check out the Oyunuma River. It's an unique sight to see the steamy hot springs pouring from the pond and turning into a rushing river.

Additionally, just 500 meters away from Oyunuma is a natural footbath where you can soak your feet in water from the Oyunuma River.

How to get there

From New Chitose Airport, take the express train or highway bus to Noboribetsu Onsen (about 60 minutes). Oyunuma is a 30-minute walk on the Jigokudani promenade.
