Beautiful and unique cherry blossom spots for admiring the sakura in Mie

Mie Prefecture

Mie Prefecture has its fair share of cherry blossom hot spots, but two in particular stand out for their particularly scenic splendor.

The first, the Mitake cherry blossoms of Tsu City, ranks in the top 100 destinations for cherry blossom viewing in Japan. Every year, travelers and photographers swarm to the mountain village to catch a glimpse of the yamazakura cherry blossoms reflected on the surface of water-filled rice terraces.

The second breathtaking spot for flower viewing, Iga-Ueno Castle in Iga City, earned the title “Hakuho (White Phoenix) Castle” for its exceptionally tall stone walls. Some 400 somei-yoshino cherry blossoms bloom around the castle walls, brilliantly decorating the historical scene. The nearby Iga Ninja Museum also offers a unique, must-see conclusion to castle-goers’ flower-filled excursions.

The best season to catch the blossoms in full bloom lasts from early to mid-April for Mitake and late March to early April at Iga-Ueno Castle. Don’t miss your next chance to experience the awe-inspiring cherry blossoms of Mie Prefecture.

How to get there

Mitake cherry blossoms:
From Nagoya Station, take the Kintetsu Limited Express to Nabari Station (about 1 hour 30 minutes). The cherry blossoms are about 35 minutes away from the station by taxi.

Iga-Ueno Castle:
From Nagoya Station, take the train to Iga Kambe Station (about 1 hour 20 minutes). From Iga Kobe Station, take the Iga Railway to Uenoshi Station. The castle is about a 10- minute walk from the station.
