Glimpse Japan in Full Bloom at Yuushien Garden, Matsue

Immerse yourself in the beauty of rural Shimane Prefecture

Between Matsue and Yonago Airport sits Daikon Island, home to dreamlike Yuushien Garden. Here, you can wander stone paths, cross bridges arching above streams and ponds, and marvel at the painstakingly cultivated flora.

Yuushien Garden is gorgeous in any season. In the spring, you'll find over 250 varieties of peony (the prefectural flower) in bloom, along with azaleas, hydrangeas, and other blossoms. All the waterfalls and streams will help keep you cool in the summer. Autumn brings brilliantly colored foliage for perfect photos. The colder months often bring snow, and the garden’s caretakers put up lights to turn the grounds into an illuminated winter wonderland.

After your stroll, stop by one of the restaurants for a bite. There, you'll be able to look out over the garden as well as sample various local cuisines. To make your trip extra special, consider indulging in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.
Access: From Tokyo Haneda Airport, fly to Yonago Kitaro Airport (about one hour 25 minutes), then take a taxi to Yuushien (about 15 minutes).
