Daisen City in Akita Prefecture is known as the fireworks capital of Japan; the summer’s Omagari-no-Hanabi is one of the “big three” fireworks competitions and attracts over 800,000 visitors every year. The winter display, held in late March, is equally impressive and lets visitors experience the city's firework heritage without the massive crowds.
This winter display is a formal competition and a chance for young firework artists to test out cutting-edge fireworks ahead of the summer meeting. You can expect to see some innovative displays as these kodama, or pellet, fireworks are considered the most technically difficult to launch.
The cold evening air provides ideal conditions to view the fireworks. Take in the display while enjoying thick, sticky Omagari miso soup and some of Akita’s fine sake. The festival is free of charge.
Omagari Ski Resort is a 15-minute taxi ride from Omagari Station on the Akita Shinkansen line.
Held in late March.
