Explore one of Japan's last wild frontiers
Ninety percent of Iriomote Island in Okinawa is covered in dense jungle, with just one main road. Despite its isolation, the island is less than an hour away via ferry from nearby Ishigaki Island, and getting around is easy with public buses and tour shuttles.
You can trek through the dense jungles to hidden waterfalls or explore the coastline and mangrove forests by kayak and canoe. Relax, swim and snorkel at Hoshizuna Beach (star sand beach), named for tiny star-shaped shells that cover the shore.
