Castle Stays

Enjoy Japan’s most impressive accommodations

Each of Japan's castles has its own fascinating history, but only two castles in the country offer a stay experience. Step back in time to the days of daimyo and samurai, when these castles served as both fortresses and abodes. Experience the life of a castle lord at Ozu Castle in Ehime or Hirado Castle in Nagasaki. Enjoy exclusive, tailored experiences and immerse yourself in Japan's cultural heritage, for an unforgettable stay.

What is a Japanese castle?

During the fifteenth century in the Sengoku or "warring states" period, Japan broke into a collection of independent domains, vying for power. Japanese castles developed as defensive forts, much like their European counterparts. Common elements included an inner tower or keep, guard towers, gates, high walls and moats. Nowadays, castles serve as majestic symbols of their surrounding towns.

At the center of town life

The castle was at the center of culture and commerce, drawing samurai, artisans, and merchants to the area. A castle stay takes you beyond the castle walls for a deeper understanding of Japan's history and culture. Ancient traditions come alive, from a grand welcome by loyal samurai troops to private lessons in swordcraft. Exclusive, authentic experiences create an unforgettable stay.
