A tree of legend in Hokuto City: one of Japan's oldest cherry blossom trees

Yamanashi Tourism Organization

In Yamanashi’s Hokuto City, which is located just a 40-minute drive northwest of Kofu City, lies a tree of legend: the Jindai Zakura. It is situated on the premises of Jisso-ji, a Nichiren sect temple that was established in 1375.

This 10.3-meter-tall, 13.5-meter-root circumference sakura tree is believed to be between 1,800 and 2,000 years old, making it one of the oldest cherry blossom trees in Japan and possibly the entire globe. This remarkable work of nature, which is also thought to be one of the oldest and largest trees in Japan, was designated natural monument No. 1 in the Taisho era (1912-1926). It has also been chosen as one of the New Japan Top 100 Notable Trees.
