Kameido Tenjin Shrine Plum Blossom Festival

Partners Information: Kameido Tenjin Shrine Plum Blossom Festival

A Plum Blossom Festival (Ume Matsuri) will be held at Kameido Tenjin Shrine!

Kameido Tenjin enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the Shinto deity of scholarship. The shrine is believed deliver blessings for academic success, so many students preparing for entrance exams pray there for good luck.

Sugawara no Michizane was known to be especially fond of plum blossoms, and wrote many poems on the subject. As such, there are over 300 plum trees within the shrine precinct, and their red and white flowers signal the coming of spring every year. Several different species of plum trees with varying flowering periods occupy the grounds, allowing visitors to enjoy the blossoms for a long time. In addition, plum blossoms have a delicate fragrance, which can be appreciated alongside their visual beauty.
