A winter-only spectacle born from man’s ingenuity and the beauty of nature

TOURISM TOYOTA

Once the winter season is in full motion, from early January to late February, a spectacle of both man and nature comes to fruition in the Inabu area of Toyota City in central Aichi Prefecture: The Inabu Ice Cascade. This frozen waterfall sculpture is a sight unique to Inabu, which lies in a high-altitude area and experiences below-zero weather for much of the winter season.

From December, a frame is set up and water is repeatedly poured over it, with the water freezing as it drips down, creating the striking display. This collaboration between man and nature is an ode to the beauty of the natural world and the importance of preserving it. The spectacle is illuminated at night in a variety of colors, from 18:00 to 21:00, making the scene all the more breathtaking.

After enjoying the magic sight of the frozen waterfall, how about warming up at Inabu Onsen Donguri no Yu? Located just a 5-minute drive away, this natural hot spring facility offers a variety of baths, including an outdoor bath and an aromatic sauna, as well as healthy dishes made with fresh local produce.
If you are looking for unique winter attractions, Inabu is definitely a great location to visit during your next Japan adventure.

How to get there

Take a train from JR Nagoya Station (1 hour) or a bus from Chubu Centrair International Airport (1 hour and 20 minutes) to Toyotashi Station. Take a bus to Inabu Dongurinoyu-Mae bus stop (about 80 minutes) and walk 20 minutes.
