The Sapporo Snow Festival, one of the largest snow sculpture festivals in the world, transforms the city into a winter wonderland each year with hundreds of breathtaking snow and ice sculptures. The construction process is, in many ways, just as awe inspiring as the festival, however it is near impossible for visitors and even locals to get a glimpse behind the curtain. With that in mind, last year I decided to make a documentary following a snow sculpture team for several months to understand the ins and outs of how these towering snow creations are put together.

With winter having arrived, the snow is falling all across Japan. For people who are fans of snow and winter scenery, Japan is a top destination! Let's look at a few spots across the country where you can see some amazing winterscapes.

In Japan there are lists for nearly anything you could think of. Some of the most famous lists are the 100 Famous Mountains, The Three Great Gardens of Japan, and the Three Views of Japan (also the Three Major Night Views of Japan). However, this time around we’ll be focusing on one of the many nature lists, namely the ‘Nihon no Taki, Hyakusen’, or 100 Waterfalls of Japan made by the Ministry of the Environment in 1990. Let’s take a look at some of Japan’s most famous waterfalls!

Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido and is the largest city in Japan north of Tokyo.  While it is perhaps most well-known internationally for the beer and the Snow Festival, there is so much more to explore in the vibrant and picturesque Northern Capital. 

Furano and Biei are most famous for their picturesque rolling fields of lavender and other summer flowers, but there is actually plenty more to see and do in the area than simply admire its bucolic rural landscape.
