9 places to see autumn leaves in Gunma

Partners Information: Between October and November, landscapes across Gunma Prefecture change from the lush greens of summer to vibrant autumn hues. From manicured temple gardens lined with Japanese maples to untouched mountainous landscapes of beech forests, there is no shortage of places to see this dramatic seasonal spectacle in Gunma. Here are 9 places to help you get started.

1. Yoshigadaira Wetlands

This scenic spot in Joshin’etsukogen National Park is covered with Erman’s birch trees, which turn an intense golden yellow in early to mid-October. Go on a hike to enjoy the stunning views set against the backdrop of the steaming peak of Mt Kusatsu-Shirane.

2. Tanigawadake Ropeway

Marvel at autumn leaves from a different perspective on the Tanigawadake Ropeway. The ropeway takes you 1319 metres up Mt Tanigawa and affords breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain range, which is typically blanketed in a carpet of colour from around mid-October

3. Watarase Keikoku Railway

This retro trolley train runs along the lush Watarase Valley and links Kiryu in Gunma with Nikko in neighbouring Tochigi Prefecture. The 80-minute journey offers striking riverside views throughout the year although but the colourful foliage in autumn is particularly impressive. The leaves usually start changing colour at Ashio Station in Tochigi around the end of October, but you will see a range of colours on the ride due to the variation in altitude throughout the trip.

4. Fukiware no Taki Falls

At 7m high and 30m wide, these impressive falls are a sight to behold in any season, but especially so from late October to early November when the surrounding forest is lit up in colourful autumn tones. For the best views, follow the paths that run alongside the falls to see the scene up close, or walk along the suspension bridge to see it from above.

5. Agatsumakyo Gorge

Walk along a forested gorge to see rock formations and waterfalls framed by fiery autumn foliage. The colours are typical at their best from late October to early November and create a striking contrast to the turquoise waters of the Agatsuma River.

6. Kajika Bridge

Located in the historic town of Ikaho Onsen, the Japanese maples surrounding this vermillion footbridge change colours from late October to mid-November. The trees are illuminated at night during this time, making this quintessentially Japanese scene even more magical.

7. Hotokuji Temple

This tranquil temple dates back to the 15th century and is home to a manicured rock garden, a traditional feature of Zen temples, and more than 100 Japanese maple trees. In November, the view of the autumn leaves reflected on the highly polished, mirror-like floor of the main building is truly breathtaking.

8. Mt Myogi

The dramatic rugged peaks, cliffs and unique sculpture-like rock formations of Mt Myogi are spectacular during any season, but particularly so in early to mid-November when pops of colours dot the landscape. The mountain is striking to look at from below, but the best way to see the spectacle is by climbing it, with trails to suit both beginners and advanced climbers available.

9. Takatsudokyo Gorge

The autumn colours at Takatsudokyo Gorge are best viewed from the Hanetaki Bridge from early to late November. The bridge is part of the 500m walkway that runs along the Watarase River, and if you're lucky, you can catch a glimpse of the retro trolley trains of Watarase Keikoku Railway as they pass by.
