Bringing smiles to the world with Yosakoi

Partners Information: Yosakoi is an energetic style of group dancing that originated in Kochi Prefecture. It is now practiced in over 200 locations throughout Japan and in 33 countries and regions across the world.

Dancers dance with naruko (wooden clappers), the symbol of yosakoi, but anyone can participate regardless of race, gender or cultural background, with few rules surrounding the dance choreography or accompanying music. This flexibility has seen yosakoi evolve with different groups and cultures and become loved by people around the world.

The special summer event ‘Premium Yosakoi in Tokyo’ hopes yosakoi will help make the world a brighter place and bring smiles to everyone amid the current pandemic. Originally livestreamed on 4 July this year, the video recording is now available to view online until 22 July 2021.

The 90-minute video features dance performances by teams in Japan and around the world interspersed with scenes telling the story of a girl who discovered yosakoi when she found a naruko. The scenes follow her experience with yosakoi while depicting the rise of the dance from its origins in Kochi Prefecture to its now widespread popularity around the world.
