Partners Information: The sacred mountain of Koyasan in Wakayama Prefecture is home to over 100 Buddhist temples and is one of the best places to admire the autumn colours in Wakayama Prefecture. The whole area is dotted with vivid red autumn leaves.

We recommend visiting Kongobuji Temple, admiring the Konpon Daito Pagoda and tasting sesame tofu with a Buddhist vegetarian meal. After that, take a stroll to Okuno-in, an ancient sanctuary and home to one of Japan's largest cemeteries.

The crimson architecture of the temples combined with the autumn colours are a magnificent sight.

One of the best places to see the autumn leaves is "Jabaramichi". It's the name of a small path which leads from the entrance of Kongobuji Temple to the Danjo Garan temple complex (East tower). Trees with red leaves have been planted on both sides of this path, producing a tunnel of autumn colours. The best time to visit Koyasan for autumn is late October to early November.

Access

Take the Nankai Railways Nankai Koya line from Osaka's Namba or Shin-Imamiya Stations to Gokurakubashi Station. From there, there is a short cable car ride up the mountain to Koyasan.
