4 Japanese ‘destinations’ to experience at Japanaroo+

Japanaroo+ is a special extension of Japanaroo 2021 running from 3 – 19 December 2021. It was created to offer in-person experiences and brighten spirits after a challenging year, and features a range of on-site events in Sydney and surrounds as well as some online events. 

The prize campaign has also been extended until 19 December. Simply participate in any of the listed events and complete an entry form for your chance to win some great prizes, including return tickets to Japan for you and a friend with ANA or JAL.  Visit the official Japanaroo website for more information.

We've compiled a round-up of 4 events to check out at Japanaroo+ and get you inspired for your next trip. We will also be at the Matsuri Japan Festival in Chatswood 2021  on Saturday, 18 December so come say hello and pick up some maps and brochures. 

 

1. Okinawa Night

Get a taste of Okinawan culture at this one-off event. Enjoy traditional dance and music performances and try awamori, sometimes referred to as the ‘sake of Okinawa’. There will also be a giveaway bag of Okinawan goods and a lucky door prize.

Destination spotlight 

The subtropical archipelago of Okinawa is the southernmost prefecture of Japan and has a unique history as an independent kingdom. From pristine beaches and coral reefs to UNESCO heritage listed sites, the beautiful and relaxing islands of Okinawa are a must see.

2. Flavours of Fukuoka 

The tonkotsu style of ramen originated in Hakata, Fukuoka Prefecture and is now famous throughout Japan and around the world. During the week-long ‘Flavours of Fukuoka’ promotion, four popular Sydney-based Japanese restaurants are offering a complimentary Japanese alcoholic beverage* when you order this beloved dish or other items as part of their ‘Flavours of Fukuoka’ menu.

Destination spotlight 

Located on the northern tip of Kyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture is a great gateway city to explore the rest of the island, although it’s also well worth a visit in its own right. Try delicious local cuisine at yatai street stalls, enjoy a traditional boat ride in Yanagawa or head to the Yame region to explore sprawling tea fields.

3. Eat the Feast of Nagoya 

Do you love Japanese food? Then you’ll want to try Nagoya Meshi, unique local dishes from Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture at the ‘Eat the Feast of Nagoya’ event. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Nagoya and Sydney, YAYOI will be offering two of the most popular Nagoya Meshi dishes at their 6 restaurants in Sydney.

Miso katsu is a deep-fried pork cutlet served with a rich miso-based sauce, and hitsumabushi is chargrilled eel on rice that is eaten in three stages - as is, with condiments, then with tea or broth poured over it.

Destination spotlight 

In addition to delicious cuisine, Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture is a manufacturing powerhouse and has a rich history, with links to the three unifiers of Japan: Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Explore the city’s samurai history at Tokugawa Art Museum or Nagoya Castle, relax at a traditional Japanese garden, or head to SCMaglev and Railway Park to learn all about the country’s incredible train system. 

Tip: For something truly unique, visit the Obara region in Aichi in autumn to see both sakura (cherry blossoms) and autumn colours at the same time, the only place in Japan where this occurs.

4. Journey to Kyoto  

Simply Native is a shop in Sydney that seeks to connect Australians with Japanese craftsmanship. In collaboration with Kyoto Prefectural Government and artisans in Japan, they are introducing a special collection of products from Kyoto, such as a monthly wagashi subscription, to support artisans who have been affected by the pandemic and border closures.

Destination spotlight 

The former imperial capital of Kyoto is arguably the cultural heart of Japan and attracts visitors from all over the country and around the world. Venture beyond the city explore another side of the iconic destination: Miyama is one of the last villages with thatched-roof farmhouses; Kibune and Kurama offer an easy day hike through lush cedar forests with numerous temples along the way; and Uji is famous for its tea.
