Matsumoto Castle Illumination

Matsumoto Castle, Nagano Prefecture lit up with a colourful projection mapping display

Partners Information: Matsumoto Castle in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture has been transformed into a colourful digital artwork as part of the Matsumoto Castle Illumination event from 1 December 2021 to 28 February 2022. From 6-9pm each night visitors can experience the castle like never before in an animated performance of light and music.

The first ever laser projection mapping display at the castle features three main productions centred around the themes: present, past and future. The 3-minute productions are interspersed with a tranquil light display highlighting the beauty of the castle, with the entire show lasting around 30 minutes.

Colourful lights also illuminate the road leading from Matsumoto City to Matsumoto Castle Park, where the Ice Sculpture Festival will be held from 21-23 January 2022.

Matsumoto Castle Illumination is set to become an annual event so add it to the list for a future Japan trip. Even if you don’t see the light display, the castle is still worth a visit all year round and hosts many other events throughout the year. Beyond the castle, the city of Matsumoto also has plenty to offer art and culture enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers, and is a convenient gateway to exploring the breathtaking Japan Alps.
