‘Yoi no Mai’ dance parade on Sado Island

Partners Information: Each year, Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture holds a traditional dance parade called ‘Yoi no Mai’ through the historic Kyomachi Dori (Kyomachi Street).

Kyomachi Dori was the main street connecting the Gold Mine and the Commissioner’s Office During the Edo Period (1603-1867), and was lined with merchant’s houses.

During the dance parade, the historic street is basked in the gentle glow of lanterns, and several groups perform the Aikawa Ondo folk dance to the accompaniment of live music. This year the parade will be held on 3 – 4 June.
